How to Drive from Kona to Captain Cook

Posted by Whendi Grad on

About 45 minutes from South Kona, Captain Cook is one of the Big Island’s most rewarding hidden gems. Known for its coffee farms, dramatic coastal views, and proximity to Kealakekua Bay, this quiet community offers a slower, more authentic slice of Hawaiʻi.

Leaving South Kona on Hwy 11, a turn onto Napo'opo'o Road leads you deeper into one of the most scenic stretches of the island. The road winds down toward Kealakekua Bay for around 5 miles, with stunning coastal views along the way.

The Big Island Bees honey farm is located in the heart of this rural community. We offer a highly rated Beekeeping Tour twice daily and you can also pick up a jar of our organic raw honey at our retail store in the same location.

Just a mile from our farm, you’ll find Manini Beach, a quiet bay where dolphins are often spotted in the mornings. Continue a bit farther—about 3.5 miles—and you’ll reach Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, also known as the Place of Refuge. Nearby is the famous “Two Step,” widely considered one of the best snorkeling spots on the island.

Watch the timelapse video of the drive to our farm below to experience the journey for yourself.
